What is an IP address?
An IP address (Internet Protocol) is a unique identifier your internet provider assigns to your connection. It works like your device's "postal address" on the internet: it lets websites know where to send the information you request.
IPv4 vs IPv6
There are two versions. IPv4 uses numbers like 192.168.1.1 and is running out. IPv6 is the newer format (like 2806:104e:...), with far more available addresses. If your IP above contains colons (:), your connection already uses IPv6.
Frequently asked questions
Does my IP reveal my exact location?
No. An IP can estimate your city or region, but not your exact physical address. Accuracy depends on your provider and the geolocation database.
Why does my IP address change?
Most providers assign dynamic IPs that change periodically or when you restart your router. Only static IPs (usually paid) stay fixed.
Is it dangerous for others to know my IP?
Your public IP is visible to any site you visit; it's required to browse. It doesn't reveal direct personal data, but if you're concerned about privacy you can use a VPN.
