How We Measure Internet Speed
Xpeedtest uses Cloudflare's open-source measurement engine (the same one behind speed.cloudflare.com), which tests your connection against Cloudflare's global network —present in hundreds of cities— for the closest route and accurate results.
What We Measure
Download Speed
We measure how much data your device can receive per second from our server. The test transfers data blocks of increasing size over 10–15 seconds and calculates the real average, discarding the first few seconds to eliminate the TCP slow-start effect.
Upload Speed
The reverse process: your device sends data to our server. Upload speed is critical for video calls, live streaming, and remote work. It is measured with the same methodology as download to ensure comparability.
Ping (Latency)
The time in milliseconds for a packet to travel from your device to our server and back. Low ping (<20 ms) is essential for online gaming and smooth video calls. We measure it with multiple consecutive ICMP/HTTP requests and report the median to avoid isolated spikes.
Jitter
The variation in response time between consecutive packets. High jitter (>30 ms) indicates an unstable connection that causes call drops even when average ping seems fine. Xpeedtest is one of the few speed tests that reports jitter explicitly.
Infrastructure
Measurements run against Cloudflare's global network, which has servers in hundreds of cities worldwide. Your test runs against the point of presence closest to your location, reflecting your connection's real-world speed to high-quality internet. This is the same engine used by speed.cloudflare.com.
Quality score by use case
Beyond raw speed figures, we calculate a quality score for different uses: streaming, gaming and video calls. This score combines download, upload, unloaded and loaded latency, jitter and packet loss to clearly tell you whether your connection is suitable (from "Bad" to "Excellent") for each activity.
Privacy
No sign-up required. We only store test results (speeds, ping, jitter, ISP ASN, and country) when a test completes. We do not store your full IP address or any personally identifiable data. Aggregated data is used to calculate average speed statistics per ISP and city, displayed on site pages.
Why Results May Vary
- Time of day: Networks congest during peak hours (6–10 PM).
- Wi-Fi vs. ethernet: A wired connection is always more stable and faster.
- Device: Hardware and operating system affect the maximum measurable speed.
- Network route: Cloudflare picks the nearest server, but how well your ISP interconnects with Cloudflare affects latency.
For a more representative result, we recommend running the test 3 times at different times of day and comparing the results.
