Typical download times at 100 Mbps
| File | Size | Time (~100 Mbps) |
|---|---|---|
| Photo | 5 MB | 0.4 s |
| MP3 song | 8 MB | 0.6 s |
| HD movie | 4 GB | 5.3 min |
| 4K movie | 20 GB | 27 min |
| AAA game | 50 GB | 1 h 7 min |
| Full backup | 500 GB | 11 h 7 min |
How is it calculated?
Download time depends on your real speed, not the advertised one. The formula is: time = (size in MB × 8) ÷ speed in Mbps. You multiply by 8 because a byte is 8 bits. In practice, protocol overhead and slightly lower real speed make it take a bit longer.
Frequently asked questions
Why does it take longer than the calculator says?
This estimate assumes you get 100% of your speed. In reality, Wi-Fi, congestion, the source server and protocol overhead all add time. Measure your real speed for a more reliable estimate.
